The Weston Friendly Society of the Performing Arts, the second oldest community theater organization in the country, will present six performances of the musical "Anne of Green Gables," starting this Saturday through next weekend in the Weston Town Hall auditorium.
The Friendly production, which stars Madeline Schulman as the spunky red-headedorphan who finds herself on Prince Edward Island hoping to find a happy home, is directed by Mary-Liz Murray. The music director is Bethany Aiken and the choreographer is Colleen Grady.
It is based on the beloved early 20th century novel by L.M. Montgomery adapted by Donald Harron with a score by Norman Campbell.
Weston residents making appearances are Camille Cuzzupoli playing Minnie-May Barry, Samantha Marchiony (Prissy Andrews), Guy Dillaway (the stationmaster), Will Anderson (Charlie Sloane), Doug Stiles (Earl), Lance Dillaway (Matthew Cuthbert), Lisa Astley-Sparke (Mrs. Blewett), Lali Haines (Miss Stacy) and Janice Elinoff (Marilla Cuthbert).
Two Wayland residents, Harrison Veal and Jenna Howard-Delman, portray Tommy Sloane and Tillie Boulter, respectively. And the parts of Gerry Boulter and Malcolm Andrews will be played by Andrew and Matthew Scherrer of Wellesley.
According to Friendly Society member Richard Leonhardt, this particular production was chosen because it’s based on a beloved family book.
"The group has traditionally done family-oriented shows in the fall, so this was a good fit. This is not a particularly frequently performed work, nor has it ever been presented by the Friendly Society. But it’s a show that everyone can enjoy. It speaks to the love of family and community and the value of simple blessings. In short, it’s great for getting people into the holiday spirit."
Although the music is not particularly well-known, Leonhardt added, some exciting numbers include "Ice Cream," "Back to School" and "Open the Window."
The Friendly Society was established in 1885 by Horace Sears and others as the First Parish Friendly Society "to promote friendly relations" among members of the First Parish Unitarian Church in town and raise money for the stone church that still stands in Weston Center.
At first, membership was limited to Weston residents connected with the church, but today it has become independent from the First Parish and is open to all residents of metropolitan Boston and beyond.
Over its 125-year history, the Friendly Society has presented many ambitious productions. Since the 1980s, these have included "Fiddler on the Roof," "Oklahoma!" "Meet Me in St. Louis" and "The Sound of Music."
Auditions for the spring 2010 musical, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s "Carousel," will be held on Dec. 8, 9 and 10.
Performances of the upcoming show are on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 2 and 8 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 29 at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 5 at 2 and 8 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $22 or $19 for adults and $19 or $16 for seniors and children under 12.
To order tickets or for more information call 781-893-9883 or visit "www.westonfriendly.org".
Proceeds from the production will go to local charitable causes.
